skills development

Ruwacon is committed to the training, developing and promoting of its people.

Considering the current skills shortage in South Africa, we are pursuing meaningful training initiatives that offer our people the opportunity to qualify themselves as competent tradesman.  Our efforts are predominantly based on learnerships, apprenticeships and skills programs for previous disadvantaged individuals within our company.  In order to provide our people with quality training, we are focusing our training initiatives on scarce skills as identified by CETA in order to further the empowerment of our people.   Training programmes such as EPWP are also pursued in an effort to contribute to the upliftment and empowerment of the respective communities in which Ruwacon operates.

National Institute for the Deaf / School for the Blind
Ruwacon supports 6 disabled students studying respectively at the Pionier Skool, a school for the blind and at the National Institute for the Deaf, both situated in Worcester.  The tuition fees for their studies are funded by Ruwacon and the company provides each with a monthly grant.  Despite their sight disability, two of these students joined Ruwacon after the completion of their studies and are currently working in the Ruwacon Call Centre.  The company equipped the Call Centre with the necessary technology to enable these students to perform their work as call centre agents.  All maintenance queries are centralized to the Call Centre where these agents then direct the respective queries to the responsible contracts managers.

Future development plans
Ruwacon realizes the need for disabled people to be developed and ultimately, to be meaningfully employed.  Therefore Ruwacon is planning to implement an initiative where deaf people will be recruited and entered in apprenticeships for trades relevant to their interest and skill.  These apprenticeships entail some theoretical work, but mostly it comprises of on-site training.  As a result, these students will gain valuable work experience whilst qualifying themselves as skilled tradesman.
